Holy cow, last night was nuts.
I noticed, last night, that I couldn't get out onto the net for anything...checked named on the server, DNS was running...looked at the firewall system, lights were on. Looked at the switch, no link light for the firewall. Jumped to the firewall's console, no response.
Great...it fried...system board, I suppose...it was an old Pentium 200MMX.
No problem, I think...I wanted to upgrade my 300MHz Pentium II server to the 1.4GHz Athlon board that I had sitting for it, so I figured I'd do the upgrade, then take the 300MHz stuff and make a better firewall.
Everything went fairly well, rebuilding server, until I went to turn the bugger on...the BIOS would discover all the hardware, as it is supposed to, but after discovering the SCSI card and the 3Ware RAID card, it would just sit there...wouldn't actually boot. If I pulled the 3Ware card, it was fine, but with the RAID card, nothing.
Finally, I wound up putting the 300MHz system back together, and I took my wife's 350MHz machine, gutted it, made it my firewall, and put the 1.4GHz parts into her machine. Guess she gets the upgrade, after all.
But, wait...there's more!!!
I'd already rebooted the server. While I'm getting the firewall restarted, and was putting the rest of the parts together for Laurie's machine, I hear a "sizzle-POP!" sound. Damnable power supply in the server popped on me.
So, I had to take the power supply from the machine that I had just put together for Laurie and put it into my server. Laurie wasn't going to be using the machine until at least tonight, so I can get another power supply before that point...but damn, I wasn't expecting to have to do this, again. Bugger!!!
Didn't get to bed until nearly 3AM, kids have me up at the crack of dawn.
Well, I have to get Matt to day care, anyhow, and Shadow to the vet to have stitches removed. Later, I'll head down to PC Club, so I can buy a new power supply for Laurie's machine. While I'm there, I may still give some thought to hardware to get the server upgraded...but I'm not sure whether I'll actually do it, or not.
Oy.
